Creating Compelling Light

Whistler, BC
July 20 - 21 2019

This workshop focuses on seeing and recreating accurate values and colours to create precise relationships within your painting to render the effects of light. Students will start the session working from photo reference. Then, in the studio, some small study exercises will be practiced as a way to hone the skills necessary to achieve the effects of light on canvas.

Weather permitting, we will paint outdoors focusing on colour composition and finished field sketches. Overall, you will learn colour mixing, design, outdoor painting logistics, and other practical techniques to improve light in your paintings.

This workshop continues to explore depicting light in paintings, and will expand on the principles from the workshop of last summer.  Although past attendance is helpful, it is by no means mandatory as there will be a review of basic principles on the first morning.  In this second workshop, we will explore how to design paintings around  light source and effect,  and how to choose and photograph subject matter in order to create luminous studio work.

Testimonials

"Gaye is an awesome teacher. I attended Gaye's daily painting workshop in Whistler in August 2011. It was a fantastic workshop! Gaye was very attentive with all the students giving all of us lots of individual attention. The demos were great. The daily painting practice is a great way to improve all aspects of painting; drawing, design, managing the paint, brushstrokes, colour, you name it. Gaye really taught us to evaluate the colour we were seeing so we could "get it right". I would highly recommend Gaye's class."
Bea Gonzalez, Whistler, BC

"The painting a day workshop with Gaye Adams at Whistler this summer was excellent! The group was lively and Gaye's presentations were meaningful and stimulating. The site at Whistler was perfect because we were slightly removed from interruptions and the location facilitated contemplation and focus."
Lynne K, Whistler, BC
"In her workshops Gaye spends a majority of her time working one-on-one to help artists at all levels develop great composition, color value, tone and light and shadow in their work. Having taken art classes and workshops over many years, Gaye Adams' workshops rank number one in amount learned for time spent."
Bill Hull, Santa Barbara, CA

"The workshop was tremendously valuable to me – not previously have I been so encouraged to "be my own artist". You could really see people's individual styles emerging in this workshop. Lots of personal attention, encouragement and valuable feedback."
